On the road between Massa and the San Carlo Spa there are many panoramic view points. San Carlo Spa is known for its waters which are particularly effective for treating renal conditions. From the panoramic terrace at the spa there is a breathtaking view of Apune-Versilia coast and the mountains of Brugiana. The villages of Pariana and Altagnana are on the same Massa-San Carlo Spa road. The origins of these villages stretch back many centuries. Both villages have a typically medieval layout and both sit atop rocky outcrops that overlook the Frigido valley. Antona is the largest town in this area though, both in size and number of inhabitants.
The town has a rich history and is home to many artistic gems such as the churches with their marbled icons that line the narrow streets. There is a strong ancient tradition of cultivating chestnuts here and in the middle of August there is a festival to celebrate the ‘fritelle di neccio’ (chestnut fritters) which are made from local chestnut flour. If we continue our journey along the Massa-Arni road we eventually come to the main square of Pian della Fioba. Here, visitors can see the Botanical Gardens which were set up in 1966 and named after a famous local doctor and botanist, Pietro Pellegrini. The garden is full of plants typical to the Apuane region. The Botanical Gardens are owned by the Massa local authorites who manage then in collaboration with the University of Pisa.
