If you love cycling and good food then the Lunigiana region is the place for you. A fantastic way to discover this corner of Tuscany is to take part in the Pedalata dei Castelli (Cycling around the Castles) on 29 April 2012. This bike ride sets off from Pontremoli and ends at Bagnone, taking in all the ancient towns and castles in the Upper Lunigiana region. What better way to discover the local Medieval towns and castles, the rolling green hills and the delicious traditional cuisine?
The bike ride takes in a total of six small towns and four castles. The route is 25km long and entirely on asphalted roads, meaning that anyone on any kind of bicycle can take part. There are two well-deserved scheduled stops to eat and enjoy the local Lunigiana cuisine.
This is not a fast-paced race, but rather a gentle ride through some of the region's prettiest spots, with plenty of chances to sample the delicious local fare. The first stop is in Ponticello, home to several famous fortified tower-houses which date back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The classic local product to sample here is Lunigiana DOP honey. The second stop is in Malgrate, which sits in the shadow of the wonderful Malaspiniano Castle, with its impressive 25m tall round tower. This stop also coincides with an aperitivo of local hams, cheeses, wines and olive oil.
By this point, there are only a few kilometres to go through the beautiful countryside to the small town of Bagnone, which also has an ancient castle. Before arriving in the town itself, there is a chance to take a break and admire the stunning Apennine mountain chain, before enjoying a lunch made entirely of local produce. There is also a small exhibition where cyclists and their friends and families can find out more about local food, wine, hotels and restaurants, as well as enjoy live music and performances.
There will also be a series of extra services available on the day including: guided tours for cyclists' friends and family to find out more about the towns, castles and cuisine on the route; the possibilty to rent a mountain bike or an electric pedal assisted bicycle; coaches to take participants back from Bagnone to Pontremoli at the end of the day; a free route pack for all participants and a free prize draw!
