Tuscany has some of the best beaches in Italy. According to the most recent edition of the Blue Guide, a guide to Italy's best beaches published by the National Environmental Protection Association, the Legambiente, and the Touring Club, Tuscany got top marks for over 20 of its beaches thanks to breathtaking panoramas, crystal clear waters and respect for the environment.

Five sails, which is the best rating given, were awarded to two locations in the Maremma: the medieval hamlet of Capalbio that overlooks the sea and further along the coast to the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, a coastal fishing town with top quality beaches and enchanting coastal pine forests.Five sails were also awarded to Capraia Island (Livorno), a true paradise that is part of a protected marine area, much-loved by snorkelers.
The nature reserve and lagoon, Orbetello’s lagoon, as well as Follonica further up the coast, were all awarded four sails as were Scarlino's Cala Violina and Giglio Island, one of the jewels of the Tuscan Archipelago, which boasts beautiful beaches like Cala delle Cannelle, famous for its fine, white sand.
Over 20 Tuscan beaches have consistently been awarded with "sails" by the Blue Guide: over 600 kilometres of coastline along the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas and various national parks and protected nature areas, sandy beaches, coastal pine forests and hidden bays and coves. Tuscany's beaches boast fine, sandy beaches or rocky coastlines. Many beaches are free while others are fully equipped to meet modern needs and comforts.
