Take a dive into summer

Exploring Tuscany’s most beautiful beaches

di Jennifer Mallegni

Sun, Sea and nature. These are the gifts that Tuscany will give you during your vacation. A fun-filled environment full of places to discover, its costal setting has something for everyone. After taking a dive in the region’s beautiful sea, take a stroll around the historical center of local towns. The day can’t end without a trip to nearby museums and squares, where visitors can discover the area’s monuments and sample traditional cuisine at a local tavern or trattoria. Then put on your dancing shoes and go for a twirl or spend the evening having a chat in a pub or elegant café.

Thanks to its fine sand beaches, Tuscany is renowned all over Italy—nature lovers and sports fans can enjoy myriad seaside sports or relax in their own corner of costal paradise. Many of the area’s beach resorts have earned themselves ‘Blue Flags’, which bear witness to clean water, top quality natural landscape and noteworthy services.

The Etruscan coast is a treasure chest of worthy gems. In Castiglioncelloyou’ll find a sandy lido with stony ridges, known for their pristine beauty. Try your hand at snorkeling and admire the multi-colored, marine life swimming on the bottom of the sea. Next, experience the wide fine-sand beaches in Vada, where beach-resorts and free beaches dot the landscape.

Don’t miss getting to know more about the territory where Giosue Carducci, the famed Italian poet was born. Marina di Donoratico’s historical center is surrounded by top-notch beach resorts, while the  north and south side of the town boasts kilometers of clean, free beaches that are just steps away from a lush pinewood. In Marina di Bibbona you’ll have a chance to visit ‘Tombola Beach’ near Cecina’s ‘Riserva dei Tomboli’ (nature reserve). Otherwise, take a walk to the town’s central beach which is just a hop, skip and a jump from the city center.

Those who prefer visiting beaches that are far from the dynamic buzz of the crowds can relax at  Baratti and Populonia. On Monte Massoncello, just north of Piombino, you’ll find beaches and reefs that can only be reached by sea, nature trails and the fire-escape road that connects Piombino to Populonia.

Many sea resorts are suitable for families with children or perfect for a younger crowd that’s looking for a bit of excitement. Try Cala Galera and Il Purgatorio, located in the famed Porto Ercole; visit Macchiatonda, La Torba and Chiarone in Capalbio or Patannella and La Giannella in Orbetello…these are just some of the marvels of Argentario.

The Maremma has a thousand faces; its northern coast is its wildest side, offering more isolated landscape. The southern side is equipped with more services and boasts the seaside towns that are considered the most ‘in’. Tourists of all types can find just what they’re looking for. Why not relax and experience the seaside like you’ve never done before? The differently-abled can also look to Tuscany for easy-access options, particularly in Follonica and Marina di Grosseto See where to go; See all beaches

You haven’t truly discovered the Tuscan seaside until you’ve swam in the cristalline waters of Elba Island. In Marciana Marina don’t miss a visit to small but unforgettable sites like: Le Sprizze, Crocetta, Fenicia and Redinoce. Those looking for more worldly adventure will want to try Porto Azzurro, while beach lovers won’t want to miss Reale, Terranera, Barbarossa, Pianotta and La Rossa Mola. See all beaches
