The 1600s in Valdarno

Over 100 works from the 1600s conserved in the area

A land that was conquered by the Florentine Republic, which built in the 1300s the "walled lands" of San Giovanni Valdarno, Terranuova and Castelfranco, the Valdarno is a rich territory boasting hundreds of important artworks.

Now those who want to learn more about the history and culture of the territory can do so through an initiative called, The 1600s in the Valdrano, which features a host of itineraries throughout the area.

Three important exhibitions have been organized: one dedicated to 17th century painter Giovanni da San Giovanni, from March 5 to June 12, 2011; a second is dedicated to the 17th century painter Giovanni Martinelli in Montevarchi (Arezzo) from March 19 to June 19; and a third focuses on the Concini family, a dynasty of art appreciators, in Terranuova Bracciolini (Arezzo), from April 2 to June 19.

Over 100 works made in the 1600s in the area have been selected as part of the event. Through organized itineraries, visitors can visit them in local churches and museums. The works showcased includes those by Lodovico Cardi known as Il Cigoli, Francesco Curradi, Giovanni Mazzonni known as Giovanni da San Giovanni, Giovanni Martinelli, Gregorio Pagani, Simone Pignoni and Matteo Rosselli. Among the works is the beautiful Annunciation by Giovanni Martinelli, which was recently found, restored and put on public display for the first time.

The initiative also focuses on what life was like in the Valdarno in the 1600s. Much attention is given to the area's "new cities" like Montevarchi, San Giovanni Valdarno and Terranuova Bracciolini, where artists had many important commissions. Lesser-known areas will also find space in the initiative, such as the Road of Setteponti in Castelfranco di Sopra, the Oratory of San Filippo Neri, where you can admire Matteo Rosselli's "L’Estasi di San Filippo Neri" (1640) and Simone Pignoni's "i Santi Pietro e Lucia" (1675).

The works on show in “Seicento in Valdarno” are presented by the cities of  Bucine, Castelfranco di Sopra, Cavriglia, Laterina, Loro Ciuffenna, Montevarchi, Pergine Valdarno, Pian di Scò, San Giovanni Valdarno and Terranuova Bracciolini.
