First stop: On the northwest side of the province, there is the Apuan Alps Park featuring the footpaths of Italian Alpine Club. In proximity to the Tyrrhenian coast, the Apuan Alp ridge follows the seaside at a distance of 15 km, making this environment extremely rich in terms of the kind of rock, height and exposure to the elements. The frequently snow-capped Apuan Alps were made famous, however, for their marble, which has been used for centuries and today is exported all over the world.
The Karst formations have created bone fide ‘monuments’ along the mountain slopes, like for example the cave of Corchia, which is equipped and illuminated for guided visits and excursions. Such a rough environment has made life rather difficult for the populations living in the Apuan Alps. These difficulties are explained in the Museo del Lavoro e delle Tradizioni Popolari della Versilia Storica in Seravezza, where visitors can learn more about the traditional economic activities of the area.
Second stop: The Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli Park is located at the extreme south side of the Versilia coast. Boasting 21,000 hectres in size, it is comprised of the municipalities of Viareggio and Massarosa, as well as Massaciuccoli lake and Macchia Lucchese basins. In the park, there are a series of unique microenvironments like those that are comprised of Mediterranean Scrub, pine trees, swamps (wet areas that are characterized by old tree stumps and sand dunes). Thanks to the 200 different species of birds, is a well known area for bird watching.
Third stop: Passing through the coastal area to the inland areas of the Lucca plain, visitors will discover a centuries-old rural territory. At Saint Leonardo in Treponzio, a small village in the municipality of Capannori, there is a permament museum dedicated to the Tools of Rural Life. It was founded with the aim of gathering ancient tools, as well as to re-construct the homes of the ancient rural life. It also aims to awaken public opinion about the harmonious relationship between rural life and Nature. The crops in the Pian di Lucca (like corn, wheat, beans, mulberry to name a few) are also documented in the Rural Museum of Piana, located near Capannori, which was once called the largest rural municipality in Italy.
