The protected area of the Lake of San Floriano

Nature area of zoogeographical interest on migratory routes of avifauna

The protected area of the Lake of San Floriano was set up in 1998 in view of its enormous value as a natural habitat for aquatic avifauna. It covers an area of 30 hectares in the commune of Capalbio and is run by the province of GrossetoSan Floriano is in a region of wetland with beautiful landscapes, characterised by the presence of white water-lilies and specimens of amphibious bistort as well as marsh reeds, bulrushes and duckweed. The fish fauna includes chub, perch, carp, trout, tench and eel. Among the most important avifauna, woodcok, grey heron, tufted duck and pochard have been observed. In the surrounding area there are hares, wild boar, foxes, badgers and porcupines.
