Park status from 1998
The park extends over 7000 hectares and rises to 300m at Poggio al Checco, its highest point. The territory has a large artistic and culture heritage, from ancient archeological finds to Etruscan and Roman remains which have been found under medieval constructions such as the Pievaccia, the ruins of Montioni Vecchio Castle and Montioni Thermal Baths. There are also other archeological finds that date back to the medieval era such as the alum caves. The state run nature reserve of Poggio Tre Cancelli is within the park. The parks hills are covered in thick vegetation common to this part of Tuscany. The evergreen woodland is also typical to the area. It’s also common to find areas that were once cultivated but which now are overgrown with wild grasses and low lying Mediterranean scrub. There is also a forest renewal programme in progress which involves the planting of conifers. The kind of wild animals found here are those typical to the Maremma region. There are many species of insects as well as deer and wild boar.
Getting there:
From the Grosseto region, the park entrance is near Follonica at Pratini di Valle. Here there is a visitors’ centre and book shop where it’s possible to hire bikes and book guided tours. It’s very easy to get to the Visitors’ centre, simply follow the Vecchia Aurelia highway and at the cross roads for Follonica (near a cemetery) don’t take the turning to Follonica but the one opposite. Follow this road for about 1200m.
