In the heart of the Sienese Chianti, known for its enchanting landscape and ancient villages, the untouched woods of oaks, ilex and chestnut trees are also the home of a permanent, outdoor sculpture park. It is the Chianti Sculpture Park, located in Pievasciata, some 10km north of Siena.
A host of internationally acclaimed artists from every continent have showcased their imposing contemporary artworks in the park. Every work is site-specific, meaning artists visited the park before creating the works that would be displayed there. This act makes the connect between art and nature, trees and installations ever more important—sounds, colours, scents, natural light and every other element of the forest are a perfect fit for the artworks displayed, thus integrating with and exalting Nature.
Artworks are made from the most varied materials—from bronze to iron, granite to marble, glass to neon and so forth. Representing very different things, like a labyrinth, a rainbow, and a large ship, the sculptures are located along a 1km long itinerary in a fenced-in section of the forest.
A few kilometers from the park there is the old kiln of Pievasciata, where more artworks are located. Here, there is also an art gallery, which displays smaller sculptures from the same artists that have works displayed in the outdoor park. The sculpture park is open every day from 10am to sunset.
