Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Ancient wine road leads the way to flavor

A journey down the wine road of Vernaccia di San Gimignano allows you to enter the world of Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG wine. This wine boasts ancient origins and it is traditionally produced in the territory surrounding San Gimignano. It was mentioned by Dante in his ‘Divine Comedy’ as far back as 1276. A dry white wine with a lovely straw-colored hue, Vernaccia has a fine, penetrating scent and a dry, harmonious taste. Excellent as an aperitif, it is outstanding with starters—mostly seafood. This wine is an exquisite match to all fish and seafood plates, in addition to being perfect with white meat dishes. It should be served cool at a temperature that varies from 11-12 degrees C.

As this territory also produces the most famous Italian red wine—Chianti—the majority of producers that work with Vernaccia vineyards also produce DOCG Chianti Colli Senesi. And what about the extra-virgin olive oil that is produced thanks to the olives trees that dot the green hills surrounding San Gimignano! Perfect for eating on a ‘bruschetta’, or drizzled atop a plate of white beans or salad, it’s a tasty reminder of life’s scents and flavors. As you wander down the Wine Road of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, be sure to notice the area’s lovely fields, cultivated with Savitus Crocus, also known as saffron.
