Wine making has always been one of the most important traditional activities on the Island of Elba. The wine which best represents the quality and charm of the island’s vineyards is Aleatico. This wine is made from grapes which are first left to dry before being pressed and which produce an intense ruby red nectar with an unmistakably fruity aroma. Aleatico is typically enjoyed at the end of a meal, accompanied by bitter honey and local pecorino cheese or a dry or sweet dessert.
This wine has been made on the island for centuries, in fact, proof has been found that it was enjoyed by the Greeks and Romans. Indeed, it could have been the Greeks who were responsible for first introducing this variety of grape onto the island. One thing we can be sure of is that Napoleon adored the sweet yet intense flavour of Aleatico wine. It is thought that during his exile of the Island of Elba, Napoleon sat alone and meditated with nothing but a bottle of Aleatico for company. He sung the wine’s praises once he got back to France.
