Baratti, an Etruscan necroplois

Clear seas and important history

Baratti and Populonia are important examples of Etruscan and Roman history. The Archeological Park, which covers about 80 hectares, can be visited via organised trails, history and archeology live in a beautiful and unspoiled landscape.

Inside the park, visit the remains of the Etruscan industrial buildings and walk on the beach to observe the area of the old forge.

The monumental necropolis of San Cerbone is the only Etruscan necropolis to be built on the seafront.

In the foothills, quarry areas alternate with cemeteries, consisting of rock-cut chamber tombs.A paved road, called via della Romanella leads you from the lower city tothe Acropolis. Via del Monastero can brings you to the Middle Ages in Populonia, with the ruins of the Benedictine monastery of San Quirico, hidden in the woods.

At the center of town, the monumental Roman temples overlook the square at the top of the paved road, “Fronte delle Logge.”

The medieval village of Populonia is surrounded by walls built to defend against pirates and dominated by the Rocca-style from the first half of the fifteenth century. This seaside town contains cobble-stone streets, small shops and a private museum of Etruscan and Roman remains.
