Capraia: a wild paradise

Mediterranean scrub, crystal seas and ancient pathways

The Greeks called it Aegylon (Aegylon megas to differentiate it from Giglio – Aegylon micron) “land of goats”.Capraia, so called for the presence of the wild goatthat once lived on the island are now only found on Montecristo, it was well-known by the Greeks and Romans.

Capraia is thethirdlargest island of the archipelago, after Elbaand Giglio, with a surface area of about 20 km sq, and the only one of volcanic origin. She presents herself like a unique ridge that crosses the entire island, reaching aheight of 447 metres at Monte Castello to the north and 410 metres of Monte Arpagna to the south. This ridge is perhaps made up of a series of eruptive mouths; while to the west it is steep onto the sea, to the east it sloops more gently creating valleys in which the “vadi”, small water courses, run.

At a height of 321 m above sea level at the centre of the ridge there is acraterous lake, the Stagnone, where wild waterlilies flower.

Many grottoes open onto the west side: it seems that some rare examples of commonseal still live there. The ichthyic fauna is in abundance, a reallittle paradise for underwater fishing, to be done however with care.

On the island the fauna is mainly represented by wild rabbits. The flora is that typical of the Mediterranean scrub and also presents various examples of wild plants. In Capraia few more than 400 people live and there is an agricultural penal colony that takes up a third of the island on the north-east side of the town.

On the island there are 4 hotels and a camping site for 450 people. The port can take up to 220 boats.
