Rio Marino is situated on the eastern side of Elba island, located on a coastal inlet surrounded by hills, whose soil—a rich, reddish colour thanks to the iron it contains—is reminiscent of the island’s mining history. In this area, iron mining had been practiced since the Etruscan age, and it was, together with fishing, the main economic activity practiced by its inhabitants until just a few years ago. Today, Rio Marina is a seaside resort, furnished with all of the modern tourist comforts. The municipality of Rio Marino was established in 1882, after it separated from Rio dell Elba.
Among the interesting cultural and historical places are the church of San Rocco, the Torrione del Porto and Elba’s Parco Minerario. In the municipality of Rio Marina, there is a beautiful area, called Cavo, which features a bathing establishment with a stunning beach of fine sand that extends to Capo Castello. Here, in Capo Castello, one can find the ruins of a Roman villa from the first century A.D. There is also a beautiful rock coastline that extends from Capo Castello to Capo della Vita. Cavo can also be reached by way of a footpath that also leads to the suggestive Tonietti Mausoleum.
