Rio nell’Elba is located 170 meters high on a hillside facing the northeastern side of Elba Island. Among the island’s oldest villages, Rio nell’Elba’s origins can be traced back to the Bronze Age. It conserves many traces of its past, including archeological finds from the sea. Famous for its iron mines that date back to the Etruscan age, Rio nell’Elba was the island’s mining centre until the mines were closed down. A wide variety of minerals are on display in the local museum, Museo della Gente di Rio.
Among the things to visit is the Volterraio Castle, a Pisan fortress from the XI century that was built atop the ruins of an Etruscan acropolis. It is located on a 380-meter high cliff that dominates Portoferraio bay. It can be reached by way of the road that connects Rio nell’Elba to Magazzini. Other places that can’t be missed are the SS Giacomo and Quirico parish church, Church of the Santissima Trinita’ and the Santa Caterina oraotorium, a small sanctuary from the XVI century with a hermitage attached. It is located on the road for Nisporto, near the ancient village of Grassera, a medieval village that was destroyed by Turkish pirates in 1500.
