Vecchiano is a lively municipality in the province of Pisa which boasts significant natural beauty. In 762 it was noted as being called‘ Vecliano’ a name which probably came from the Roman name ‘Vetuleius’, meaning ‘land belonging to Vetuleio’. The village grew up along the right hand bank of the river Serchio, towards the mouth of the river which flows into the Tirrenian sea. The whole low lying area of the Serchio valley is typically Tuscan with gently rolling hills and small streams.
Marina di Vecchiano is almost hidden amidst the thick Mediterranean vegetation. Its 4 kms of unspoilt beaches and uncontaminated countryside make it real gem. The ancient Gaetani Castle looks over the whole area from its position in the hills behind Vecchiano. The castle belongs to the Agostini family and is well known as the Santa Maria Retreat in Castello which is perched in the hills above Vecchiano.
