Explore the fortress of Ghino di Tacco while admiring the Apennine Mountains

Located on Monte Amiata, the town of Radicofani offers unbelievably beautiful vistas overlooking the Appennine mountain chain, Bolsena and Trasimeno Lakes and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Constructed on a bed of volcanic rock 896 meters above sea level, the town is surrounded by the ruins of an imposing fortress that defended the valley dividing Tuscany and Lazio for centuries. Of Etruscan origin, as evidenced by the recently discovered Etruscan Temple dedicated to Vertumno, and after the barbaric invasions, Radicofani recuperated its ancient strategic role bestowed by Desiderio, the last king of the Lombards. In the centuries following, Radicofani belonged to the Vatican State, the Republic of Siena, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Republic of Italy.

From the top of the town, you can see feudal castle built in the Carolingia Era, then enlarged and fortified by Pope Adriano IV (1154). The castle was then transformed into a fortress by Baldassare Lanci for Cosimo de’Medici, and from 1297 to 1300 it was the exile of Ghibelline Ghino di Tacco, spoke of by Dante Alighieri in the VI Canto of Purgatorio and by Boccaccio in the Decameron. After the fall of the Republic of Siena, the castle was the place of a heroic resistance effort until it was defeated on August 17, 1559. The fortress was abandoned in 735 after the arms depot when aflame.

The Palazzo Pretorio, which is the municipal building, is located in the upper part of the town and was built in 1255. The facade of the building is adorned coat of arms of the Republic of Siena. Walking along via Principale you will find the Sant’Agata Church, which is an ex-convent. Inside the church there is a splendid alter-frontal by Andrea della Robbia and a wooden crucifix from the 1300s. The piazza in front of Sant’Agata, there is the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle from the XIII century. It contains many works of art. In the public gardens next to the piazza there is a statue of Ghino di Tacco. At the bottom of the town there is the grandiose Villa Medicea ‘La Posta’.
