Natural beauty makes the Maremma a top spot

Places to visit: Argentario
Length of stay: Week-end
Ways to get around: Car and bicycle

Area Description
Agrigentario’s high, rocky landscape hosts magnificent small beaches. The area’s tourist towns—Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole and Capalbio—are among the most fashionable beach destinations for intellectuals from up and down the boot.
The region’s economy, once entirely based on fishing, now depends on tourism as its primary source of income. It is known for its exceptionally temperate climate and excellent geographic position that provides easy access to islands within the Tuscan archipelago, including Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo. On calm summer days, the turquoise sea surrounding the costal dunes sparkles beneath frothy foam. The territory’s inland areas are also worth a visit, for those who long for beautiful outings and outstanding hiking trails.

Don’t miss
The Burano Lake Area has been declared a World Wildlife Fund oasis, enjoying natural state reserve status since 1980. It includes a 410 km stretch of land where natural trails abound, along with educational centers, huts, observation towers, a trail for the disabled and a breath-taking butterfly garden. This magnificent costal lake, separated from the sea by a intact Mediterranean barrier, is surrounded by lush landscape including juniper plants and other native bushes. Visitors won’t want to miss Capalbio’s waterfront which extends for 12 km, from the municipality of Orbitello to the Tuscan border. History lovers will want to visit the Spanish Fortress in Porto San Stefano, which overlooks the town’s historical center.
