The Apuan Coast

Explore and discover the sea

The sea appears welcoming and brilliant, protected by the lofty cathedrals of marble that are the Apuan mountains. If you are coming into Tuscany from the north, then the first taste of the coastline has a special quality about it that is different from the nearby towns one after the other perched on cliffs overhanging the sea. Here the landscape changes, the rock gives way to wide stretches of very fine sand that slips gently into the sea. The backdrop consists of the breathtaking Apuan peaks framing a panorama of intense brilliant green made up of the sea, the towns and villages, the mountains, all with their origins, traditions , colours and aromas.

The protagonists of this particular symbiosis are the blue sea, the beaches equipped with facilities, the seafronts behind which lie the pine-groves and then on up to the elegant towns of Massa and Carrara, situated at the foot of the mountains of marble. The beauty of being able to alternate bathing one day with excursions into the hills or mountains on another is inestimable - rather like observing a magnificent panorama while tasting fish soup and the much-appreciated local ‘lardo di Colonnata’, washed down with a glass of Candia or Vermentino.

A sandy riviera, 20 km long, offers to the tourists many attractions such as bathing establishments, sailing and diving centres. Marina di Carrara and, just to the south, Marina di Massa, Ronchi, Poveromo and Cinquale di Montignoso are independent seaside resorts. Distances that, even if short, guarantee to each place a proper personality.

In Marina di Carrara, one of the most famous Italian sailing clubs is active, a forge of champions, such as Luca Santella, the Chieffi brothers and Paolo Bottari, who have excelled in regattas around the world. Not surprisingly the urban fittings of Piazza Menconi, crowned by a magnificent fountain, are completely paved with marble.

Marina di Massa, famous since the early XX century, became the centre of the Liberty and many villas were built according to this architectural style. Among these, the most significant were: Villa Corsi, Villa Doria and Villa Franca. In the same time, the historical Hotel Italia started to welcome the bathing tourists. In 2009, Piazza Bad Kissingen, a symbol of the partnership between Massa and the german city of Bad Kissingen, was refurbished and now it offers to the tourist a wonderful marble monument, called "Le vele", created on the drawings by Pietro Castagna.

In the past Ronchi and Poveromo were spotted by exclusive villas surrounded by wide pinewoods and exclusive hotels becoming an élite tourism town. Here - as Alberto Moravia said - "I'm protected and relaxed. The Apuan Alps and memories protect me from the infinite; the sea, on the contrary, is the metaphore for a wide infinite."

Cinquale, a famous location in Versilia, has always been the favourite place of famous artists: Enrico Pea, Gabriele D’Annunzio and  painters as Carlo Carrà and Mino Maccari lived here and were inspired by its beauty. The small port, which hosts about 200 boat places, offers a wonderful view on the Apuan Alps. Alongside the beach, the Gothic Line Monument recalls the atrocity of the Second World War. Riding up along the River Versilia, the protected area of the Lago di Porta, managed by Legambiente and the WWF, welcomes the tourist.
