The lakes of the Val di Chiana
The lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano
The lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano are known in Val di Chiana as the ‘chiari’ or ‘lights’ for a simple reason. You need only look eastwards from one of the many villages overlooking the valley to see the glimmer of these two small stretches of water, set in the middle of the countryside like two tiny mirrors. They are both small and shallow yet have a considerable effect on the ecosystem of the surrounding area. In fact, providing the local economy for centuries with a constant source of fish, today they represent two very important natural areas, constituting an ideal habitat for some very rare flora and fauna. It is worth taking one of the characteristic rowing boats to discover the most hidden corners of these two delightful little lakes - the sight of a red heron or a little egret rising in flight from the reed-bed is truly incomparable.
