Riding in Val D'Orcia, between the Abbey of Sant'Antimo and Montalcino

A land famous for the excellence of Brunello wine, the Val d'Orcia also offers other remarkable riches. It is ideal to explore it on two wheels, to plunge into these unforgettable landscapes.

This itinerary has a low mileage, but, after a first part on dirt road (7 kilometers), the climb from Sant'Angelo in Colle to the Passo del Lume Spento begins: if you are fairly trained, you will not encounter any difficulty.

We start from Castelnuovo dell'Abate, but not before visiting the beautiful Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a jewel of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. You immediately take the dirt road that with continuous ups and downs leads to Sant'Angelo in Colle: accompanied by the view of the Val d'Orcia below, faithful cypresses and precious vineyards you reach, after about 7 kilometers, the paved road. It is here that you turn left to reach the nearby Sant'Angelo in Colle.

From Sant'Angelo in Colle you continue uphill towards Montalcino, riding along a short stretch of road you have already traveled. After about 5 kilometers of constant riding, you arrive at the Passo del Lume Spento (in Ragnaie), before descending toward Montalcino. Once you arrive in the capital of Brunello, the ride is no longer difficult: at this point you do not touch your pedals for a good 9 kilometers, along the beautiful descent through large vineyards that leads again to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo and Castelnuovo dell'Abate.
